 | 12:16 am - fabric a-go-go I made four bags today, and cut and prepped another 4 more. I am on a roll, girl.
This is the purse I made for my niece, Azure. It has fabric from one of her mom's dresses, some of my grandma's fabric and the denim is from an old pair of my pants. I'm pretty happy with it. Yes, it has "errors," but I'm not a sewing snob.

 | 11:20 am - Dogs and vet care Dolly is going blind. She is bumping into things and unable to see things right in front of her. We took her to the vet, to get her a physical and to see if she has cataracts or if the thyroid meds are causing blindness. No cataracts, and no connection between meds/blindness. It cost us $75 to hear this. He suggested we go to see a dog opthamologist. I simply cannot afford dog eye surgery, which I'm pretty sure is the only thing to do. Will blindness severely change her life? Yes. Is she physically uncomfortable being blind? No. Can she do her regular activities? Yes. So, I now have a blind dog.
Rosie has an ear yeast infection. I've tried some home remedies over the last week, but her ear is not improving. I am going to take her to the vet, because she is now clearly in pain and her ears are very sensitive. This is a condition that is absolutely treatable, and possible to cure with medicine and appropriate treatment. It will be expensive, but this is a treatment that is affordable and if not treated, will immediately and irrevocably alter her life (deafness, death) if not done. So, we're going to the vet Monday.
I'm feeling slightly guilty that I'm not going to pay thousands of dollars for Dolly to have eye surgery, but I simply can't afford it. A few hundred dollars (if necessary) to prevent Rosie from deafness or worse is affordable to me.
I need your absolution. Current Mood: sad

Only one phone number transfers from one to the other.I have to manually enter contacts? Really? I laughed at the website for entering contacts manually for download. There better be more pages than that. I am an old curmudgeonly man when it comes to phones.Where's my rotary?

 | 03:41 am - ?! OK, I'm sure many of you read the news as obsessively as me, but this one is too damn good to NOT share with as many people as possible. And this way, if anyone knows anything further, they can toss it out into the mix:
El Pelon might possibly maybe be coming back sometime?!

 | 09:40 pm So in August I moved into an older 3-unit house (middle floor) in the Brighton Centerish area. When we moved in, we found some rodent poison under the radiators/behind the stove and some traps under the sink. I didn't think much of it- we live in a city, there are mice, no big deal/whatever.
We haven't seen any rodents, nothing has been in any traps, and we haven't found any poops anywhere. Awesome, right? The first few months passed without incident, however with the colder weather approaching, we have noticed that there are things living in our walls. We haven't determined what exactly they are (they sound way too big to be mice... they scurry around quickly, make a lot of chirping noises, and make rapid thumping noises like bunnies) but they make a ton of noise. We can hear them running, thumping, and scratching in pretty much every room of the apartment. They are in the walls and the ceilings and it seems like they never stop. We've tried banging on the walls but the bastards are fearless.
Do you think I should bring this issue up to my landlord? Let's say he doesn't care,do I have any legal recourse in the matter? He's this little old Italian man and I get the feeling like he's going to take the "oh well, what are you going to do?" approach to the situation (when I asked if we could get a cat, he told me "NO ANIMALS, they smell, you make bambinos instead" to give you an idea of what he's like), but it is kind of gross/annoying. I have allergic asthma and have been feeling particularly under the weather for no reason lately so I'm starting to worry that the unknown animals are pooping in my lungs while I sleep or something.

 | 07:53 pm - Question for T-savvy travelers Hullo. I have a question about getting to Logan via T.
I'll be coming in from the red line, and I was wondering if it's better to transfer to the green line at Park Street, get on the blue line at Gov't Center, and get off at the airport station OR just get off at South Station and take the silver line shuttle?
Is the silver line a bus, or a subway service? The massport website says one thing and MBTA.com says another.
One big thing is that I'm flying the day before Thanksgiving, and it's going to be pure madness. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks folks.
Edit: Silver line wins by a landslide. Thanks everyone!

 | 02:13 pm - in which i talk about teevee but not really and ask for some food opinions earlier today i spent a good fifteen minutes trying to explain sons of anarchy to rich-the-coworker - he asked - it got very complicated. he apparently watched the pilot of white collar and did not like it. O.O he thought it was dull. O.O i will however still continue to talk to him.
my stepcousin is having thanksgiving this year and is inviting twenty-four people. O.O i volunteered to bring a baked brie and crackers, and then she asked me to also bring some cookies. i don't want to make the best chocolate-mint cookies ever ever (even tho they really are the best ever ever) but i'm not sure what to make. suggestions so far include oatmeal chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin with craisins and maple syrup. what else screams "thanksgiving in new england" to you?
also is apricot jam a good idea or a weird idea to bake in a brie? usually i make it with raspberry but the last time i was in the store i bought apricot and i need an opinion on which would be better, or if there's a third option i haven't considered. now i just have to remember to, you know, buy a brie. and crackers.
the aforementioned rich the coworker is going to rome for thanksgiving. i might be jealous. altho i like thanksgiving. it's my kind of holiday - it's all about the eating. :D oh, ok, and the being thankful.
it was pouring rain when i left the house this morning and by the time i went to get the mail it was sunny and HOT out. like spring again. WEIRD. if i had a front yard it would be SO confused. Current Mood: curious Current Music: dashboard confessional on the internal radio

 | 01:14 pm - Grub Street question Have any of you been involved with or taken classes with Grub Street, Inc.?
http://www.grubstreet.org/
What can you tell me about it? Or rather, what can you tell me about your personal experience working for/studying with/networking thru/doing whatever with Grub Street Inc?
Admittedly, I'm in a slump life-wise and sometimes I write so someone told me to check them out, is how I found out about them.

 | 11:35 am - Chrome OS So, Google announced Their new Chrome OS. Basically it's something that has been bandied around for years and years, and frankly, I never liked the idea, I'd like someone to explain why this is a good idea.
Basically, I think Chrome OS turns your computer into what We used to call a network toaster. (or possibly just a network appliance, and I turned "appliance" into "toaster" because I like toast) Anyway, the idea is that you store NOTHING (other than Chrome OS itself) on your computer. All your apps are web-apps. All of your data is stored on the web. You email, is on a web page (Probably like it is now.) Your word processing is like a Google Document, stored at Google (or wherever). Your games are web games, etc.
Now I see some advantages of this to, like my mother. She pretty much just surfs and reads email. Although she does write some documents (Some of which need to be secure for HIPAA reasons...)
But I'm a programmer. I want to be able to write programs on my computer, I want to be able to have access to them quickly, etc.
Ok, fine, so I'm a rarity. But there are LOTS of gamers out there. They are not going to want to play Left For Dead 27 where the app is actually on the web. That's going to be PAINFULLY slow, isn't it? Offices which run on tons of databases and spreadsheets etc, won't want that to be "Cloud" based... they want control over it. People want to be able to play and burn CDs, etc, all of which require actual hardware access.
Now, presumably, Chrome can deal with some, or all of these issues, but to me they sort of show a major flaw in the philosophy of turning your computer into just a web browser....
And fundamentally, I'm paranoid. I don't want Google, or whomever, to have access to all of my documents. I want to control those myself. (More importantly, I don't want Google to have access to my health care or financial documents...)
Thoughts?

 | 08:24 am Alright, just waking up, I'm not sure I'm reading this right. In England, the towns of Cockermouth and Cumbria have been flooded beyond recognition, and in Ireland the River Suck has burst its banks, flooding the town of Ballinasloe. Many many journalists will have to grit their teeth through these sentences today.
I've only been awake a few minutes, let me think about last night this for a bit.
This was yesterday's reading.

 | 09:53 pm I may have petted my new Farscape: The Complete Series box set after tearing open the Amazon box. It's so shiny! John! Aeryn! Lots of leather and pop culture references and craziness! Also: the little orange sticker on the outside said "15 HOURS OF BONUS" which gave me pause. Bonus what, exactly? Crazy? (Yes, yes, I'm sure it's chock full o' special features, but let me mock with affection, okay?)
(Hahahaha the actual box says "bonus features" so I guess the sticker-proofing gnomes went home early that day.)
